One of the biggest challenges of condo ownership is home decoration. What makes this task difficult is the fact that owners often have more design ideas than they can actually fit into a relatively small condo unit. Because of this, some owners may feel the need to play it safe when it comes to decorating their space so as not to compromise livability.
This shouldn’t have to be the case, though; there are plenty of ways that you can spruce up your place with the right furniture. Whether you’re living in a condo for rent or one that you own, these tips are sure to make your unit attractive without wasting space.
1. Prioritize. Dividers and side tables may be nice to have, but if you don’t have the space for them, it would be better to shelve these ideas for now. Have a look at your condo’s floor area and focus on what you really need, such as a bed, a living room set and a dining set.
2. Get multi-purpose items. Pieces of furniture that serve various purposes will make sure your condo is still fully furnished without taking up a lot of space. Reduce clutter by getting ottomans and coffee tables that offer storage. A sofa that converts to a bed is great for when you have overnight guests. In the bedroom, you can get a loft bed that has a bed at the top, and everything from a workstation to a mini living room or library underneath.
3. Think about form along with function. When shopping for space-saving items, it’s also important to consider the furniture’s appearance and how it affects the overall look of the condo. For instance, bulky furniture can make the unit appear cramped, so choose slim and light furniture when you can. You should also choose pieces in lighter colors to make the place seem bigger.
4. Consider how you live. Are you the kind of person who’s always on the go, or do you like to entertain people frequently? This will give you an idea of how big or how small your furniture should be. For those who are usually out of the condo, you can make do with single chairs, a small couch and a two-person dining set. Love seats, futons and a dining set for four to six people would be best if you like having friends over a lot, granted that the unit has enough space.
When furnishing your condo, you need to study your unit’s floor space, plan how you want your layout to look and make smart buys. Once you find the balance between aesthetics and practicality, you’ll find that space doesn’t have to be an issue in trying to create a habitable unit.
