People who dream of becoming homeowners one day typically envision having a large house with an even larger backyard. While it’s not a bad thing to consider buying a huge property, common sense tells us that these days, having a big house is not all it’s cracked up to be.
If you are thinking about buying a house for sale for you and your family, here are some reasons why thinking small might be a better way to go.
1. Larger homes mean larger expenses. Obviously you’re looking at a gargantuan cost if you want to buy a huge house, but consider your home finances in the long run, too. At the rate of utilities these days, how much would it cost to cool your house in the summer, and how much water will it take to maintain that extensive garden every month? What about the repairs that you need to do regularly?
2. Larger homes require a certain lifestyle. People have a tendency to want to fill up every empty space in the house with something: you need to have a chandelier hanging from the high ceiling, the garden needs to have a gazebo, or the 4-seater dining table needs to become an 8-seater to fill up the dining room. With this in mind, there’s no doubt that you’ll be making countless expensive trips to Home Depot trying to get your home to look just right.
3. Larger homes take up your time. Having a large home means being ready to dedicate the time to maintain it. Unless you’re willing to spend money hiring a cleaning crew or a landscaping company to do all the work, you’ll be spending more time keeping your house presentable than actually enjoying it and spending time in it with your family.
4. Larger homes might take a while to sell. People are becoming smarter with their purchases by looking ahead. If they already know how much money it will take to buy and maintain a big house, they’re not even going to consider it.
When you consider your long-term expenses, that large house you’ve been thinking about becomes less and less ideal. A small house may not be what you’ve been dreaming about, but its practicality is sure to give you the same satisfaction in the long run.
