As June ushers in the rainy season, homeowners scramble to protect their homes from the potential damage that heavy downpours can bring. Water damage can range from a small leak to major flooding, both of which can be severely damaging if they happen often enough. Not only that, rains accompanied by strong winds also carry the risk of things being hurled at your home and your family.
To make sure that your house will be as safe and dry as possible during any rainfall, don’t forget to carry out these helpful tips.
1. Head up to the roof and check for cracks and holes. Replace missing shingles and seal any holes or replace portions of the roof that are beyond repair.
2. While you’re up there, have a look at your rain gutters and see to it that they’re free of leaves and twigs that can cause blockage. When you get down, check outside drains for clogs, too.
3. Inspect the caulking around your windows and doors. Cracks can let in moisture and leakage, so any chipped and cracked caulking should be reapplied.
4. If there are trees in your yard, check it for old branches that can fall and cause damage or harm, and cut them down before the rains come.
5. Gardening tools, garbage cans, bicycles and other things that can be lifted by strong gusts of winds should be put away in the garage.
6. If there are areas in your home that are lower than the rest of the house, consider placing sand bags around them to keep water out.
7. Doors, windows and other parts of the house made of wood can sustain water damage if it’s constantly absorbing water, so remember to apply a fresh coat of waterproof varnish to protect them.
8. If your basement displays signs of moisture and leaks, cover up the holes using concrete sealer.
9. Check your ceiling for signs of leaks like warping or discoloration, and have them repaired immediately.
10. If you have a swimming pool, remember to drain it halfway so that its water won’t overflow and ruin your landscape or enter your home.
When your home is constantly exposed to rain unprotected, it can not only lead to foundation damage but also to mold growth. Don’t forget to run these checks and make the necessary repairs to prevent them from getting worse.
