So you’ve finally found an apartment for rent that you love and you’re ready to move in. Not so fast; whether you’re moving for the first time or have been hopping residences for most of your life, relocating can be a stressful experience. You need a great plan of action if you want to make sure that everything goes well (and that you keep your sanity in check).
Pack up (way) ahead of time
Moving into a new apartment is hardly something that you can drag your feet about; you need to give yourself ample time to get everything ready. Packing cannot be done in a flash, even if you’re the most organized person on Earth. Make sure that you have enough boxes, labels and old newspapers for all your things. If you’re feeling particularly obsessive, make a list of all the things that go in every box so you know where things are.
Get rid of what you don’t need
If there is something in your present home that hasn’t seen the light of day for quite a while, it may be time to let it go. Keep in mind that apartments are small, and any useless knick-knacks and paddy whacks will only be taking up space that you need for more important things. Don’t be in such a hurry to toss them out, though; either hold a garage sale or donate them to a charitable institution. You win either way: you get rid of your extra stuff and earn money or help the less fortunate.
Ask for help (paid or otherwise)
If you’re planning to pack away your things by yourself, you’re going to need a few weeks or months, depending on how much stuff you have. You can make time go faster by getting a couple of friends to help you out; all it will take is a celebratory pizza afterwards. Also, not all good friends have moving trucks in their garages, so be sure to book a service weeks before, especially if you’re moving in the summer, which is when most people do their relocating.
Have your services transferred
Ask the landlord which services will already be turned on or available when you move in so you know which of your current services you need to call and request for a transfer. Also, remember to tell all friends and family about your address change so they can update their contacts. Don’t conveniently forget to tell your credit card company about your change of address, either. If you have any magazine subscriptions, be sure to keep them up-to-date as well.
No matter how much you prepare yourself for your move, a few surprises are bound to pop up. Still, being extremely organized early on will make sure that you can handle glitches much more easily on the day itself.
