When choosing an apartment to rent, one of the options that you have is a studio-type apartment, especially if you are considering living alone. A studio apartment has an open floor plan that combines the living area, the bedroom and the kitchen.
One of the things that make a studio apartment popular is that it’s more affordable than a one-bedroom apartment. Still, you need to remember that the price of the apartment should not be your only basis for choosing it. Here are some features that you should look for when selecting a studio apartment for rent.
1. It goes without saying that studio apartments are small by nature, but that doesn’t mean that they are all the same size. Look for one that’s within your budget, but will also fit your things without looking or feeling cramped.
2. Make sure that the layout of the apartment is something that you can get used to. Remember that all the rooms (save for the bathroom) will be connected, and it’ll be up to you to either leave it like that or somehow create divisions for each ‘room’. If the floor plan looks awkward, you’ll have a more difficult time arranging your furniture to create the illusion of having different rooms.
3. Storage features are critical when you live in an apartment; you’re going to need all the extra space you can get in such a small area. Does the apartment have built-in shelves? If not, are you allowed to install some? Also, check the size of the closets, as well as how many cabinets or drawers there are for your belongings so they don’t end up in a moving box shoved in one corner forever.
4. If one of your essentials is a large space (or at least the illusion of having it), try to find a studio apartment with high ceilings and large windows. These features will make the apartment look and feel bigger than it is, since a high ceiling can make the place more airy, and tall windows can let in more sunlight.
Just because your budget only allows you to rent a studio apartment doesn’t mean that you don’t have a choice as to the features that it will have. Look in newspapers, check online real estate listings or ask a real estate agent for options that will suit your needs.
