When you look for an apartment to rent, you have to consider various important factors such as its location and the floor area. After taking these into account, one of the things that you should take into account next is which floor you want to occupy.
While it seems insignificant compared to location and size, the floor in which the apartment for rent is located will be a big factor in how much you’ll enjoy living in the unit. Here are some of the pros and cons of living in the top, bottom and middle floor of an apartment building.
Top floor
Living in the top floor lets you enjoy the panoramic view the most, and also allows for maximum use of natural light. On the top floor, you won’t have to deal with noisy neighbors above your unit, and you won’t have to worry about disturbing them, either. On the other hand, transporting heavy equipment from the ground floor up to your unit will be a struggle, whether you’re using the stairs or the elevator. Moreover, should the apartment’s roof suffer any damage, your unit might take a direct hit. In case of a fire, firefighters may also have a harder time reaching your unit, making safety an issue.
Bottom floor
At the bottom floor, you get to enjoy living even closer to amenities that are close to the apartment, since all you have to do is step out of the apartment to get to them. You also don’t have to lay down carpets and rugs to dampen the noise you make on the floor since you won’t have neighbors below your unit. Then again, since you’re pretty much at ground level, you’ll have to endure traffic outside, not to mention the noise of people walking past your unit all the time. On the bottom floor, you’re also more susceptible to pests that may come in from the streets.
Middle floor
Because of its location between the top and the bottom floors, the middle floor is where the advantages and disadvantages of both options level out. Also, while it doesn’t get to enjoy using more or less energy during the different seasons like the top and bottom floors because of the way cold air goes down and hot air rises, middle floor units consume pretty much the same amount of energy, which makes budgeting utilities easier. Perhaps the biggest drawback of living in the middle floor is the fact that you have neighbors both above and below you that you have to worry about.
If you’re actively looking at apartments for rent, make sure that you take into consideration where the unit is located, since the various pros and cons will affect you greatly if you plan on living there for a long time.
